For customer success leaders: where to start

Where do I start in customer success? Read the renewal book, record value early, defend the at-risk accounts and prepare customer reviews.

The question

Which renewals are at risk, and can our customers show the value they’re getting?

Renewals are decided long before renewal week. The job is proving value early and spotting the accounts going quiet.

Where it sits on the loop

The customer side: Onboarding, Evidenced, Expansion and Renewed, which feed new pipeline through expansion and referrals.

How to think about it

  • Value is proven from day zero. Agree what success looks like when the deal closes, and record the first result.
  • The book first, then the account. See which renewals are at risk across the book before defending one.

Common mistakes

  • Starting the renewal conversation in renewal week.
  • Counting logos but not revenue. Losing one large customer can outweigh several small wins.

Your view

With the Customer Success Leader role, the Revenue Engine opens on the Customer Success persona (CS BRIEF — AS OF TODAY), with Renewal Forecast and CS Movers cards. See Revenue Engine home.

Start here

  1. Review the renewal book: Renewal review.
  2. Record value: Value & Impact.
  3. Check the customer side of the loop: Where is the engine stuck?

When the data is thin

  • Your scope on the masthead. Unless you’re a workspace owner or admin, the masthead shows your own book. The Renewal Forecast and CS Movers cards are available to CS leaders and managers.
  • Movement needs history. CS Movers needs an earlier value-and-impact snapshot before it can show a change.

Do it this week

  1. List the renewals in the next 90 days and, for each, the last result the customer could point to.
  2. Mark any with no result recorded and no contact in two weeks.
  3. Pick one to defend this week and agree the evidence you’ll bring.
